Connections Unlimited

Play Connections unlimited: sort 16 words into 4 groups of four, with 4 mistakes allowed. 3 levels, and a new puzzle each time you press Next.

How to play the Connections game

  1. 1

Tap four words you think belong together, then press Submit.

  2. 2

If you are right, the four merge into one bar with the group’s name. If not, you lose one of your 4 mistakes, and three out of four gets a One away.

  3. 3

The dots on a bar show how hard that group was, from one dot to 4. Run out of mistakes and the groups you missed are shown, but the puzzle does not count.

  4. 4

Shuffle puts the words in a new order, Deselect clears your picks, and Next puzzle brings a new set.

Connections tips

  • Look for the red herring. A puzzle of 16 words usually hides at least one word that fits two groups. Before you submit, find all the words that could go with your four, and if you find a fifth, the group is probably not what you think.
  • Start with the group you are surest of, not the easiest looking one. Clearing a group takes four words off the board and often settles the word that was pulling two ways. You have 4 mistakes, so a safe first group is worth more than a bold one.
  • Say the words out loud in different senses. Many groups are about a second meaning, a word that can follow or precede another, or a hidden word inside it, and the odd reading is often the one that finishes the group.
  • Use Shuffle when you are stuck. A new order breaks the pairs you keep seeing, and a different layout can bring a link back into view. A One away message means three of your four are right, so swap a single word.

Connections Unlimited questions

How do you play Connections?

You are shown 16 words and sort them into four groups of four that share something in common, as Wikipedia and Tom’s Guide describe the game. Select four words and submit them: a correct group is revealed with its name, and a wrong guess costs a mistake. Every puzzle here is written for this site; you get a new one each time you press Next.

Can I play Connections unlimited, with a new puzzle every time?

Yes. Press Next puzzle and a new puzzle appears at once, at the same level. There is no daily limit and no sign-up. Each level has its own set of puzzles written for this site (555 in all), and the ones you played most recently are skipped.

Is this NYT Connections or a different site?

No. The Dles is an independent site. We wrote this version ourselves and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by The New York Times, which publishes the original daily Connections.

How many mistakes do you get in Connections?

You can make four mistakes, according to Tom’s Guide and Yahoo News. This version follows the same limit: the four marks under the board show how many you have left, and a guess that is one word away is flagged as One away. A guess you already made does not cost a mistake.

What do the yellow, green, blue and purple groups mean?

In the original, as Wikipedia and Tom’s Guide describe it, the four groups are coloured yellow, green, blue and purple, running from the most straightforward group to the trickiest. This version does not use those colours: it marks each group’s difficulty with one to four dots instead.

When did Connections start?

The New York Times launched Connections in June 2023, according to Wikipedia and Yahoo News.

Do you write your own Connections puzzles, or copy the NYT ones?

We write our own. Every puzzle here was made for this site, and none is copied from The New York Times or anyone else.
